When you do something over and over, it is easy to let the quality suffer a little bit. This definitely applies to brushing teeth! Over time, we let bad habits creep into our routine, and our smiles suffer for it. Here are some bad habits to avoid in your oral hygiene routine.
Keeping Your Toothbrush for Too Long: Toothbrushes are made to be used for a few months, then thrown away. If your toothbrush is older than three or four months, it’s time to get a new one. If your brush has worn or frayed bristles, or has been contaminated in any way, replace it immediately.
Brushing Too Quickly: The average time people spend brushing their teeth is 45 seconds. The American Dental Association, however, recommends brushing for two full minutes each session. If you are speeding through your brushing time, try setting a timer, or turning on your favorite song.
Brushing Too Hard: If you use harsh pressure to scour the plaque and food away, you also run the risk of damaging your tooth enamel and gum tissues. Think “massage” rather than “scrub.” This way the plaque and debris are removed, without injuring your teeth and gums.
